They aren't mean vicious animals. Most people mistreat them to do that. They love kids and are very loving. They can be trained.

There are people who say that a pit bull will snap for no reason, that half of them will do just that. With over 5 million pit bulls in this country just think if that was true. There would hundreds of deaths a year and 1000s of injury. You would have 5 to 15 in every major city everyday. 95% of pit bull attacks are caused by abuse to the dog, the dog being trained for fighting or owners who have no clue how to handle a breed like APBT. If people want to own a pit bull they should do their home work both on how to train and raise one and were the puppy they are looking at comes from. Know the blood line, the pit I own was breed by a person who's family as been breeding pit bulls to close to a 100 years. No dog the family as bred as turned. In the city of Las Vegas there as not been a bad pit attack for 20 years. This would seem odd since in North Las Vegas as a huge problem with dog fighting. My service dog is a pit bull the people on my block likes to have him out front when their kids are playing because he raises he!! when a stranger comes around.

It's a 50/50 mix of how they are raised and the dog itself. Just like people, there are some that are just plain bad. Most of them, however, are very loving and easy going and can be trained to be either vicious killers or wonderful guard dogs.

This is a loaded question. the American Pit Bull Terrier, were breed to be family protectors. Known as the nanny dog people like Helen Keller and Presidents Wilson and Roosevelt had them as pets. Do to their size and strength they prove to be the best dog for people who fight them to use. Sires were picked for their over aggressive traits and not for the ones they became loved for. Do to that kind of breeding there are now many pits out there that are vicious do to the fact they suffer from a thing called rage syndrome. If people want a APBT they need to buy from a breeder that is responsible en ought to make sure they are not breeding aggression into their dogs. With over 5 million pit bulls in this country the vast amount of them are good family dogs. We need to get rid of those who are turning this and other large breed of dogs into monsters. I own a pit bull best dogI ever had. She makes me want to go out and shoot the people who train this breed to kill. I have work with pit bulls for years and have seen ones so abused and fought you think they were a lost cause trun into wonderful family dogs with just a little love and warmth from a human

I had the greatest, most lovable pit named "Petey". My nephew once was wrestling with him and my nephew accidentally stepped on his(let's say) sizable love nuggets.
Petey flipped my nephew pinned him, and growled as if to say, " Damn,I should kill you!" But Petey didn't.
A year later, Petey had killed a crow in the back yard. My kids, and my girlfriend's daughter were poking the crow with a stick. My friend's lil girl was closest . Petey jumped at Rachel. Instinct won over. My friend, ( who was baby sitting the kids, I was not home), Could not deal with the stitching process. I ended up holding Rachel for 35 of her 54 stitches.
We loved that dog. We raised it lovingly. He was a 125 pound lapdog. BUT A PIT BULL HAS INSTINCTS. When it snaps, it will always result in severe injury or even death.
We loved Petey, and still speak fondly of him, but I would never recommend a pit as a pet.

They are a strong assertive breed and they require a firm hand and consistancey in training and dedication from an owner who will take lots of time and train them/They are fine but some will have dog aggression problems and you have to be ready to deal with that.
Other than that train like any other dog.
They are smart and tend to learn basic stuff quickly. Many of the ones I have worked with were easy learners and wanted to please the owners.

There's been 3 attacks here in california this year and some people want to ban them. They are just natually agressive dogs, I guess because years ago they were trained to fight. My friend had a pure bred pit bull and it jumped up and nipped at his wife so he kept it tied up in the backyard. I used to go play with him, wrestle with him but he never hurt me.

Bad dogs are made bad by bad breeders and owners. They can be loving family pets if bred and trained right.
