Our cat ,who we found about 1 month ago,is acting very affectionate ( as of yesterday) and when you pet her ,she does this weird crouch thing, she gets all stiff, and she moves her tail to the side, she is also mewoing more. The interesting thing, is we took her to the vet almost three weeks ago, and he said he could tell that she was spayed ,because she had a scar.Does anyone's spayed cat act this way,or could the vet be wrong ?

I work at a cat shelter, and we have shaved cats many times, seen a scar, and assumed they were spayed. SOMETIMES, we were WRONG!!!!! Perhaps bladder surgery, perhaps a c-section...but there was a scar. Now we have the vet open them and make sure!!!!

All it would have taken would be for a tiny portion of tissue from an ovary to have been left behind during spaying and the hormones would still cause expression of estrus. So yes, a spayed cat could act that way.

I would think you could get a blood analysis done when she is in heat to see hormone profiles, but it would probably be expensive. If she really bothers you with going into heat every month, I would check with a vet to see if they can possibly ultrasound to see if an ovary, or part of one, was left behind, or see what other options they can offer you.

Well, I rescued one about a month ago and she started doing the same thing, so I KNEW she was in heat. I took her in and had her spayed. Did the vet shave the area to see the scar. I'm not putting your vet down, but on occasion the vet I worked for thought the umbilical scar was a spay scar. Second opinion maybe??

I have a question within a question. Can a vet tell if a cat is fertile by checking urine for hormones?

You might ask your vet if this is possible.

I adopted a neutered six month old male from a shelter. Hello!
It was an unspayed female and she went into heat as soon as she got home.

could be that she was not spayed and she is going into heat. It also could be that she was spayed and some tissue was left and that will make her go into heat. I would take her to your vet and describe the symptoms and see what needs to be done

It sure sounds like she's in heat to me. I would get her checked again. The scar may be from something else. If she has been spayed, she may be just doing one of those weird cat things that some cats do. (My sister has one who, if you scratch her back, she licks the floor!).

Maybe the cat just wants attention.
I wouldn't go with seeing "a scar" as proof of altering--ask for a CAT scan (no pun intended).

Maybe the vet was wrong, it does sound like she is in heat. Does she meow all night long and drive you crazy?

Well this would be a normal behavior for you cat. My cat does it, so I wouldn't worry about it too much about it. If the vet says she's fine, she's fine. Hope I helped!
