I was with you up till you used the word "mexican" immigrants.why not just say "immigrants" or do you think it should only apply for mexicans?As for learning their language I think it has a big part to do with the fact that some are too old to learn a new language and as for the rest well I'm sure they could if there were schools that could teach them.If you are so mad about the whole "press 2 for spanish" then blame the corporations not the people.They are the ones who are catering to them by putting that on there,because afterall in the end it all boils down to money,dinero,the benjamins or whatever it is you want to call it.Personally I'm waiting for all the american citizens to have their own version of May 1st but doubt that's going to happen,I mean if that happened what would half of this countrie's teenage population do? It's hard to understand because the government sends a different message. Years ago, the government didn't provide forms in other languages. The Polish, Germans, Russians, Italians etc... needed to learn the language and assimilate to survive.

Now, the government makes forms in various languages so people don't have the need to learn. Also, the government has become more liberal in their social programs so if you cannot land a decent job due to failure to learn the language, they can apply for government assistance in their native language.

The immigrants are only 1/2 at fault.... our government has given them the opportunity not to assimilate so they bear the brunt of the other half of the blame. That being said, perhaps we are at fault for letting the government get so powerful that they now ignore the voice of the people and continue with their agenda against our wishes.

Assimilate to what? Who are you to say how people should be. Have you forgotten that America is comprised of immigrants to begin with. Have you ever been to another country that didn't speak English? If you did you wouldn't have that attitude. Trust me, the feeling is very scary not to be able to speak that country's tongue and for them not to understand you. But through my experience, I was never looked down because I couldn't speak their language. We shouldn't either of Mexicans or anybody else if we are true Americans. Is it a pain in the butt trying to communicate with them? Probably. Would it make life easier if they spoke English? For us yes. But to tell Mexicans that they HAVE to assimilate is down right prejudice. We should learn from them as well as they should learn from us

I agree, I also understand that All immigrants come here holding on to their cultures, values and beliefs and that while I too believe that they need to speak English what they bring from their former countries is important. We must remember that this country was founded by immigrants and immigrants are still are an important part of today's society. I do agree that if you want to be an American that means you need to speak English and accept our system of values. We as Americans should be entitled to think however we may choose but we also need to know that others don't have to agree.

Most of them think that most immigrants are unprepared I'm sorry to tell you guys this but you all are wrong....I really don't know if all of you live in rural America or around Non-English speakers...I am an American Citizen whose first language is not English...I had an opportunity to learn English and I did... and Just for the record I have never picked tomatoes for a living.

Agreed. I am all for anyone wanting to come to the US and becoming a citizen...but you should have to do it the right way. The US should adopt the UK version of immigration: you have to pass an english test.
