The UN is only as useful and effective as its members want it to be. Like the Vatican, it has no army and relies on member states to provide forces to carry out operations. However, the alternative is the US AND the UK going it alone as happened in Iraq, and the world sees how that turned out.

Is anyone foolish [a silly question] reading this answer?

The 'United Nations' simplified is a Committee. A Committee in this case is made up by the representation of member States who have a free vote to either, vote for or against any proposal.

The United Nations has no powers except those granted and approved, by the member States.... However, the language of Diplomacy in the UN is deceit in nature, in my opinion, but I hope that lies might continue to postpone our eventual self-destruction!

It didn't have power against Russia either, and if you will recall the Iraq invasion would have faced a French Veto. Essentially any of those with veto powers can veto. Otherwise they would never have joined. We/they are willing to discuss and consider, but not to hand over our sovereignity.

After the Oil for Food scandle, I'm not sure we even think it is a very useful forum for discussion any more, however.

In this world climate it is no longer the only mutinational forum, so we can choose forums we have more confidence in.

I agree that the UN is useless. So shall we disband it?

Do you know what your asking? Do you want to be governed by foriegn nationals? You'll get your wish the one world government will be the UN.

I'm glad you want to be ruled by such nations as South Africa, China, Poland, Russia, everyone else out there. Too bad for you if they declare you go to jail if you don't do the job they tell you to do or marry or any other variety of social laws - they will legislate those too.

They just voted down giving the UN the ability to tax you - do you think your paying enough yet? Next time you may not be so lucky to be taxed to support other countries interests.

Keeping peace between other countries. I live in Cyprus and we have them here to keep the peace between north and south cyprus they patrol the buffer zone and i have seen them down my road a few times. No offence here becasue i am from the uk but really USA and UK are going to carry on doing what they want regardless of what the UN say which is why they have no power over them

The UN is NOT the world government as much as the New World Order would like you to believe. Learn your history. Read. Do some research on the internet. (BTW. Asking a question on Yahoo Answers is NOT considered legitimate research)

U.S. is one of five permanent member along with Russia, China, UK, France. they have veto power, and any of these countries can stop UN from any action. It's not just US and UK.
UN has many organizations under it. And it does many good things. International court of Justice, Economic commissions, Human rights commission are few of many parts of UN that work for this world

The UN has power over no one. It is totally worthless. The UN was supposed to oversee the disarming of Hezbollah in Lebanon... did a real good job there, right?
