Reading the bible whould be a wise choice. from cover to cover leaving nothing and i mean NOTHING out!

Psalms 137:9 Happy [shall he be], that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

Matthew
10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. (10:34-36)
I came not to send peace, but a sword. ... A man's foes shall be they of his own household."
Jesus came not to bring peace but to destroy families by making family members hate each other.
Is Jesus peaceful?

Jehovah's Witnesses use these verses to justify forcing members to disfellowship (shun) their own family.
10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

12:51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: "Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division."
Jesus did not come to bring peace, but division.
Is Jesus peaceful?
12:52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.(12:52-53)
"The father shall be divided against the son."
Jesus prophesies that families will be divided because of him and his teachings. Sadly, this is one prophecy that has been fulfilled.
12:53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

As a beginner? Remain silent for at least a year. Learn all that you can from other christians and be sure to stay in the word DAILY. Yes, daily! The reason why I say remain silent is because it seems that most new christians like to spout alot of stuff out due to their new excitement and really just don't have the tools sharpened just yet.

The single greatest principle I can suggest is authority.
Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

The second is to study the Bible.
2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Most people do not understand the difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament. One needs to apply himself diligently to be able to keep things in their context.

The Old Testament has been taken away, replaced by the New.
Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

The New Testament must be our pattern today, not the Old. If somebody cannot give New Testament authority for what he teaches or practices, he is wrong and must not be followed.

the 2 important principles are to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, and mind-and to love your neighbor as yourself...there are Christian bookstores which have a lot of really good bible studies, and sunday school is a good place to learn more about Christ and the bible, and to exchange ideas on living a Christian life...God bless you, and my thoughts and prayers are with you on your Christian walk...

Find a basic theology for Christians and read it. A good little book is "Know what you believe" by Paul Little, also he wrote Know who, and why you believe.

Get involved in Sunday school.

1) Read the four gospels, and pay special attention to what Jesus said. Use a red letter edition. Do what Jesus said.

2) See #1 above.

Find a moderate church. Don't get too caught up in thinking you have to be perfect and life is going to be perfect. Participate in a good Bible study. It's ok to ask questions, have doubts, and continue to learn.

Love God first of all and your neighbor as yourself or in other words do unto others as you want them to do to you.
As to you personally, God tells us guard our hearts, and to make sure of our election.
Read 1 Peter 1 to see what things he refers to.
