its funny but ive been in alot of places... in places where there is constant bumper to bumper traffic and a huge population like miami for instance, people tend to take off faster and at the same time ... this maximizes how many cars can get through the light before the next red .... in places with less population its like they arent as experienced with how to deal with traffic especially at rush hour and they take off slower and one car will go and then the next and so on ... its really aggravating ... i wish they would all go to miami for awhile and learn how to drive ...

Love2havefun is, in part, right. Most motorists are paying attention to anything but the traffic signal. Shuffling thru their briefcase, putting on make up, shaving, reading the paper, dialing the cell phone, or (as we say in the trade) they're nose-pickers.

Another factor is from the time a traffic signal turns green until the car starts moving can take up to five seconds or more (think how long it takes a bus or a tractor trailer to get moving).

Additionally, in some areas it's just common sense to pause an extra second or two. In some area of the country some motorists are more likely to run a red light. Thus the driver with the green light may pause to make sure he doesn't get t-boned.

(I have 22 years experience as a traffic signal technician.)

If you start at once your are running the risk of being broadsided by the idiot who tried to beat the red signal that just got displayed to the cross traffic before your light went green.

If someone behind you wants to tell you "you're number one" using his middle finger, then it's just too bad now, isn't it?

The question should be, "How come some people are in such a big hurry?"

to the guy who thinks miami has a lot of traffic.... ha ha ha....you think miami has a lot traffic? you should try going LA or any other place in southern california. Ive been on streets that took around 30 minutes to get through 5 intersections for a total distance of one mile.

For one, you're impatient.

I, personally, always drop my car into neutral at a stop light, so it takes me a second after the light changes to engage the clutch and change the gears. Usually just enough time for some self-important jerkweed to start honking becasue he's being delayed.

Don't be so impatient. There's nothing you could possibly be driving for that will be ruined because you had to wait five more seconds.

If they're taking a long time, they're probably not paying attention, or they're being cautious. Which is a GOOD quality.
