Maybe she got into a fight with another dog or a coyote or maybe a raccoon.

I really would need more information to guess an answer. Was he confined to your yard? Was there any mowing going on near the dog? Does he like to chase cars, or bark at lawn mowers? Could he have gotten his tail stuck in a gate or something and hurt himself pulling it free?

Why do you say he was attacked? Did you see or witness an attack? If so, what did you see or hear?

I'd be happy to fathom a guess with more info provided.

their are many scenarios that could cause that to happen.
another dog perhaps bit him, somehow got his tail stuck somewhere ( when i was a kid we had a cat that had about 4" of its tail chop off when the front door was closed ) the cat was fine
piece of its tail hanging from the door a few inches from the floor
> i will never forget that

Could have easily been another dog or large cat. Since you didn't say what breed or how big the dog is, it is hard to guess.

Maybe a bird or reptile. Dogs almost always use their teeth when they attack (a cat might also be the cause).

That is hard to say. There is many things that could rip hair out I hope you find out what it was.

Hair on tail probably got stuck in something and she pulled it free.

I would say another dog or perhaps some wild animal.
