Having tried various styles of yoga for the past couple of years, I would highly recommend either basic Hatha yoga or Iyengar yoga.

While Hatha yoga is usually a general term, usually a blend of styles, it can either be a vigourous practice or a slow and gentle one depending on the teacher. If you are going to a yoga studio, make sure you go to a beginner's Hatha class or ask the teacher what kind of pace he/she teaches.

Iyengar yoga, created by BKS Iyengar, is a style that pays attention to the details of each pose. Since this style is known for using props such as chairs, blocks, bolsters, and belts, it helps the beginner come into a pose with the assitance of these props.

If you live in California (Orange County or LA) or in New York, try attending classes in Yoga Works for basic Hatha Blend classes as well as Iyengar classes.

For beginners who are not used to much exercise or stretching, it is best to avoid styles like Ashtanga/Mysore and Bikram-- as they demand endurance and flexibility. Until you can build your stamina and become more flexible, you'll find these quite challenging.

I am not actually familiar with the yoga show in Fit Channel, but my guess would be is that they teach Hatha yoga since it is a commonly practiced style.

Good luck and Namaste!
