There are a couple of different methods you can try. There are spray hair detanglers that you can buy, pet or human formula are both the same. You can also try massaging the tangle with baby oil or olive oil. This will make it much easier to brush out. And if all else fails, you will have to resort to cutting the tangle out. Remember to cut with the fur. Then simply brush the tangle out without leaving any uneven or bold spots in the cat's fur.

They have little safety razors you can buy to cut them out. It's just like the thing they texturize hair with at a salon.
Or you could take her to a pet grooming place and pay someone else to get scratched and bitten while de-knotting her (my choice!).

There are special "combs" that can detangle and also "cut" the matt out. Any pet store should have them. I used it on a stray I found a while back. It works great but you do have to take your time because it can tend to hurt!!

the best thing I found is to use little manicure scissors to cut them out you have very little chance of cutting the cat with those

if it is truly a tabby, it should be short-haired and not get tangles.......?
brush gently from the outside to the inside, and see if that works. or take it into petsmart and get it groomed.......oh wait.......i think they only groom dogs there.............
