It's spelled "Elephant."
The guns you describe are hand guns. Unless you wish commit suicide by elephant, you need a African big game rifle. Your .44 mag would bounce off his skull and piss him off. A .475 H&H will do the the trick.

8/7/06 oopps! Jack is right .375H&H, my bad....

It would be foolhardy to hunt elephant with either. I have heard of elephants being 'finished off' with a .44 Magnum carbine, but that was after being disabled with an elephant gun (specifically, a .404 Jenkins).

This was after the rogue elephant was shot four times with the Jenkins rifle and the shooter (not a hunter) used up all his Jenkins elephant gun ammo. He had to resort to ten shots from a .44 Magnum carbine at close range (again, he ran out of ammo). The poor elephant still took another half hour to die in agony.

Even though the elephant was a rogue beast that had already killed one Native, it is a shame that the shooter did not have the expertise to put the beast down humanely, if possible, with a single shot from the .404 elephant gun. He did not know where to shoot the elephant, and elephants can absorb a lot of lead.

If you are serious about hunting elephant (for whatever reason), then get a serious elephant gun.

Oh, about the '.45 Magnum,' I can't imagine ammunition would be easy to find on the Continent. Although I've heard of a professional hunter in South Africa who shoots rogue elephants with a .350 Remington Magnum. I can't imagine where in Africa he can find ammo for that! I have trouble finding it in Houston, TX., and you can find just about anything here.

Neither. The minimum caliber for dangerous game in Africa is a .375 H&H rifle. Not a hand gun, period...ever. Next you need to have about $30,000 american to hunt elephant. The cost is based upon the weight of the Ivory from the animal you kill. To really answer this question all you would need to do is a little research on hunting in Africa. Just do a search for elephant hunting, or dangerous game in Africa.

I'm not picking on you "Lana" but there are 44Mag rifles and while a 475 H&H might do the trick, to my knowledge there is no such caliber/rifle...You might be thinking of the 375 H&H or 458 Win Mag.?

The 460 Weatherby Magnum is a great choice for "hunting Elephant"...

Dude, you're on your own as far as "killing elfent" goes...If you bag one I'm sure your fellow PETA members will be proud of you...You're obviously their most intelligent member, and to actually do something in the wild other than sit in a tree would be quite an accomplishment...

Neither, the elephant would think a mosquito bit it instead of thinking it got shot.

.416 Rigby or the like is what they shoot there, I believe. Handguns are just backups.
