Does anyone know a REAL way to keep yourself from crying while peeling an onion?

the reason why you cry when chopping or peeling onions is that the chemical that they give off makes you cry.

i know this sound obvious. it seems that the most practical solution is to have a cup or a bowl of water next to the onions as you peel or chop them as this will absorb most if not all of the tear inducing chemicals

When you peel the onion, leave the root end on and chop round it. When you finished chopping just throw the root away. Should stop the juice from making you cry too much!

If I think of it in time, I cut the ends off the onion I'm going to chop or slice and put it in the fridge for 30 minutes or so it really help me not cry while chopping.

I peel the onion under cold water first. Then, when I chop I don't cry.

Squeeze an orange skin in your eyes before you peel an onion. You can be rest assured you will not cry of onion peeling

It is funny but people who wear contact lenses are safe from tears....but as for the rest of us.....the center of the onion is the cause for the water works. So, you have to cut around the center. Lemon juice removes the smell from your fingers by the way. Happy cooking!

I heard freezing them works, but I have never tried it personally. I know when I use the left over onions in the fridge they do not make me cry as badly.

My garnishing instruction book says to place the onion in the freezer for 5 minutes before cutting it.

I have heard that when your chopping the onion, take a bite of bread and keep it on the roof of your mouth.

You should put them in water
and/or you should wear goggles

WHY?:
Because when you start chopping the onion a gas will be liberated causing you to cry
