JUST B
I said rationalist only so I didn't have to read this kind of tripe. Jesus and mohamed are many things...logical is not one of them.
Trying to prove the existence of a being by claiming he WILL come and do something , and then we'll be sorry, is not proof of anything except that you are delusional.
Learn to argue rationally.

VASHSUNGLASSES. I don't "believe" (intentional irony) it is possible for someone to truly be a philosophical rationalist and a christion, as christianity is an irrational belief system based on belief in the unseen and unknown.
For your information, there is almost no credible evidence of a historical personage named jesus christ. There is more evidence that there was a historical mohamed. Perhaps I should have said Hercules or Jason instead?

DON
Thanks for the list but I just stopped at the big two cause I only have 110 characters for a question. It does reinforce the idea that there is a sucker born every minute...whether you believe in Ganesh or God

STEVEJ Not sure whose question you're answering but it wasn't mine. But since you brought it up...yes, I am also skeptical of ESP, remote viewing, telepathy. I don't think you're argument that the government spent a lot of money on it so there must be something to it is valid. What about the International Space Station? Star Wars Missile defence? No time here but I refer you to James Randi's excellent webpage if you want to learn more about "remote viewing"

SHEPERD and others have questioned my use of "rational"...Fair enough. Skeptics..non-believers...atheists...brights..free-thinkers...choose a label. I just didn't want a lot of bible thumpers answering. And....FYI...it is IRRATIONAL to believe in bible-god.

This is a good question! Hmmm. Let's think about this.

Mohammad is a real historical figure, although most of the story surrounding him is fictionalized or exaggerated. Since Islam is the largest group (over a billion people) and growing also, it will take a little more time to push a 'real' man--Mohammad--out of relevancy. Plus, the religion he spawned has a seductively attractive feature--misogyny--that its proponents will hang onto pretty hard.

All told, I give Islam 200 years, if that long.

Christ is completely based in myth, having been invented as a catch-all deity by an empire losing its grip on a far-flung populace. So I predict that Christ will go into the footnote bin way ahead of Mohammad. We're coming out of the initial backlash from the original expose of the Age of Enlightenment, so I guess it will be another 100 years or so. Keep your copy of 'The Age of Reason' handy just in case the opportunity arises sooner, though.

The originator of this particular myth cycle, Judaism, is making its death rattles now, showing its shortcomings with religious pronouncements on how Lebanese children are 'declared' as 'not innocent victims' by rabbis in Israel (as if they can get any rational person to believe such pronouncements). With all the trouble Israel is getting the US into with its biblical (smite them!) foreign policy methods, I think the good book will go into the myth bin pretty soon--maybe 50 years.

I'm busy writing my own creation story, on the theory that we can hurry this whole thing along if there's something entertaining and fulfilling to supplant the popular choices available now.

It's a good thing I'm a Philosopical Rationalist AND a Christian, so I guess I can answer this.

Both Mohammad and Christ are actual historcal figures so they do not compare to mythological beings like Zeus and Odin. They will be seen as myths only if there is some sort of catastrophy and all historical records of those periods are lost (as well as all Christians and Muslims) and the world fell into a new dark ages.

Don really spent some time on this one, actually...I think they will never be truly forgotten or stopped being worshipped but a new god will appear soon.

;)
I know you think all this psychic stuff seems like a load of crap, and it is very understandable why you feel this way. I certainly have no credibility to tell you otherwise but I can only present an offer to your curiosity. More people are learning and devoloping these mental abilities more than ever and will soon be the majority and then there will be a pressure for others to develop them. I know your going to dismiss this completely but hear me out. I'm sure in your circle of friends and colleagues there is probably alot of criticism towards this so-called psychics. It's inevitable though. People want to learn these things because we are capable of doing them. Look up remote viewing, it is a very scientific and strict protocols are in place. The military sure thought it was legit, they invented it. (somewhat)

FYI, there ARE resurgences of people out there who are starting to worship Zeus and Odin among Neopagans and Reconstructionalist religions like Hellennism and Asatru (worship of the Greek and Norse Gods respectively). I should know, I am one (Asatru).

So even if Christ and Muhammad DO become "historical myths" there will always be people out there who will either worship them underground or about a thousand years from now they will be worshipped once again when some people decide to reconstruct the religions, just like what's happening with the Old Gods now.

It's hard to say since Christianity and Islam are a lot more global than ancient Greek, Roman or any other culture/religion of their era. It will probably go down with the fall of capitalism, since it's the system that caries these religions. If all these wars continue it will probably be for another 100-200 years as poverty increases.

Probably at least another 1000 years. I figure that, since it is one of the most long- lasting belief structures in history, it will take the conquering of another major, non-JudaoChristian civilization to bring them down. However, the culures following these religions are still strong, and getting stronger (economically and militarily). Thus, all of modern civilization as we know it would need to completely collapse, and in turn be supplanted by another religious movement spawned in desperation.

So, 500 yrs, for us to run out of oil, hit the next freeze, and be half wiped out by disease. And another 200 yrs for people to finally lose hope in their god. Three hundered more for a new religion to replace the old and become the pinnacle faith of the majority of cultures.

Sorry to interrupt in your Rationalist only question, but Mohammed(S) and Jesus are not going to end up as myths, since they are logical, and Jesus one day will come back to the earth and will reveal the Truth, "Did Zeus do that?"

Please define the term rationalist. The reason I became a Christian is because I rationalized that Jesus is the only way to eternal life. So as a rationalist I would have to say that Jesus will never become a myth.

Sometime after the fall of America and other modern societies. For Christianity anyways.

This will only be true of the Christian god, since Jesus was an actual person.

"Just B", Zeus didn't do it and neither has Jesus. For your argument to have any steam it would have had to happen already, not just be prophesied.

Won't happen because Jesus and Mohommand were actual people that walked the earth and there is evidence besides 'holy books' that support this.

Nice try...but this is not a very rational question.
