You may not need a new usb cable. Gees. I got all my stuff from a dollar store. If you have the book for the printer still, it will say in what order to do stuff. Even if you don't have the book, there isn't much to know. Usually you need to connect all the cables (poser and usb.) The only difference is whether or not to turn on the printer. I would say not (first). Once the cables are in, use the cd to install again. If it doesn't work, then go to add/remove programs in the control panel and choose the printer driver in the list and remove it. Then use the cd to reinstall. You could also see if there are any conflicts in the device manager (from system in control panel). If you have any other usb devices that work fine, then that is not the problem, see. Sometimes there is a readme file of some kind on the cd. It tells you stuff, but not usually enough, in my opinion. May talk about installing. Try doing things in this order. It should work fine. Hope this helps.

SNAP!!! :)
One of my printers (when working) liked to locate the disk rather than install from it. But try the above...

Check your USB cable.
Ensure the USB cable is connected tightly. You may also want to connect the USB cable to a difference USB port to make sure the port is not the problem.
If that does not fix the problem your USB cable may have gone bad. I had to replace one. Got a cheap one on eBay.
I hope this helps. I know hardware problems can be very tricky to touble-shoot. Good luck

Uninstall, install again without connecting the cable. When installed connect cable and turn printer on, this often works.
Best of luck.

Enusre all previous versions are cleared off the PC, and you have deleted all the other printer drivers that are not used.
Try a differant USB port, sometime they are odd like that, I have a laptop that does not like one of its ports at all.
