I have a Presto brand pressure canning machine pre-1950. It has eight screws to hold the lid on tight. If you have experience with this type of machine, or know the basic instructions for regulating temperature (etc.), please respond. Thank you.

I would be VERY CAREFUL about using a pressure canner (pressure cooker) of that vintage. The early ones were prone to exploding as they didn't have all the modern pressure release safeties found in todays pressure canner (cooker). Presto is a long time name in the pressure cooker business and they can probably give you some additional advice along these lines. Personally, I recommend you purchase a brand new one. They are not all that expensive and pressure cooking/canning is FANTASTIC!!
