I have heard that the religion of the Vulcans ln Star trek was based in major part on an actual religion, although i've never heard specifically which one. I personally see some parrallels to Taoism but Im not certain. Has anyone ever heard which one its supposed to be copying?

Buddhism.

Even if I didn't know that for a fact I would still say Buddhism. Think about it...nonviolence, the elimination of desire and all negative emotions that arise out of that desire (anger, lust, jealousy, etc), the search for inner piece and truth through the elimination of selfishness, ego, and other things that cloud clear rational thought...

Leonard Nimoy felt that the Vulcans represented the Jewish people (to which he belongs). As a bit of stage "business" in the episode Amok Time, he invented the famous "live long and prosper" Vulcan salute (palm forward, fingers pointing up, separate the middle finger and the ring finger) based on the hand symbol used by kohanim during the Priestly Blessing. The Gesture actually emulates the initial Shin of the Shema. Many Jewish priests agree that Leonard Nimoy should never have seen the hand gesture for two ecclesiastical reasons: first he wasn't going to become a priest, and second he was supposed to be concentrating on the prayer. Nimoy himself admitted that, as a boy, he peeked to see what the priests were doing.

The creator or Star Trek once said that his purpose was to create a world without God. This is a tenet of the state-sanctioned religion of Secular Humanism.

I'd go with buddhism becasue it talks about controlling your desires, and clearing your mind. Also, a lot of the relationships between Vulcans seem detached yet caring.

Some of the rituals seem inspired by Japanese rituals such as the tea ceremony.

The 'split fingered vee' formation (Live long and prosper) of the hands was something that Leonard Nimoy (Spock) learned as a child from watching the Rabbi at Shabbat services.

Also of note is that William Shatner (Kirk) is also Jewish.

T'Pol says she doesn't believe exactly everything that is said about Surak. In other words, this is skepticism about the Vulcan religion much like many Christians say they don't believe everything written in the Bible (ENT: "The Forge").
