A fast whippet can beat a slow grey but as a rule the greyhound has a higher top end. Now whippets due to there small size are able to "Take Off" and turn quicker than the grey so a whippet may win if the race is less than 50 yards or one a very very tight curved track. After that, well, the grey will win "going away".
PS for any extreamly long race (like a mile+) bet on the Saluki (persian greyhound)

It is an interesting question. Whippets do accelerate faster but the greyhound has a faster overall speed. It is said that a whippet is around 35 mph and a greyhound 40. A lot will depend on the length of the race and how straight the track is. If the whippet is doing 35 almost right away and it take the greyhound longer to reach top speed (relatively speaking) the whippet will have a bit of lead that the greyhound will have to make up, which it can if the course is both long enough and straight enough but put a few turns in there the whippet can actually extend a lead because it can corner a bit better.
I own a whippet and two border-whippets the whippet out does them by a ton but it is fun to watch them run such a great site.

Agree with 'ragapple' and 'Peter' above, that the whippet is faster in the short sprint (up to 50 yards) but the greyhound will win after that. We have a whippet and the whippet can beat a ball hitting the ground when I
heave it with only a slight arch. She is damn fast in a short race.

A greyhound is faster, and as you said this is why they are used for racing. However a whippet will give it a run for its money. A greyhound can run on the exciting side of 35mph.

ok well greyhounds are faster but need more length to get going, whippets are smaller and more nimble, i had a whippet that could turn on a rabbit by sitting down mid turn and skidding round.
a fast car can out accelerate a fighter plane over the quater mile, but the fighter plane is much faster over the mile

Greyhound is the fastest dog in the world - their speed can exceed 40 miles per hour in three strides. Greyhounds have a double suspension gallop, their heart is bigger than the hearts of other dogs, cardiac output of a greyhound increases by 5 times during a race (in 1 minute a greyhound pumps his own body weight in blood), more red blood cells than other breeds.

I used to think the greyhound was the fastest dog in the world until the day I saw a mates scottish terrier get ready to have a dump in front of one of those gas powered bird scarers.
The scarer went off with a hell of a bang and I swear the scottie covered 500 yards in about 0.4 of a second - most of it airborn :o))
