When I try to copy anything it just makes a humming noise. All so there is a red x on the camera icon in the start up bar, on the bottom of the screen. How can I fix it?

it sounds like the transport mechanism isn't moving.
If it's a brand new scanner, they come with "locks" to keep the mechanism from moving during shipping.
Make sure such a lock is not in place and engaged.
if that is not the problem, you very well may need a new scanner.

may be u have not plugged it correctly!!!
or right click on scanner icon and check settings
or go to control pannel and check settings of Cameras and Scanners.... or reboot ur computer after correctly plugging in !!

Plug it in correctly.
Perhaps the mechanism is defective. Is it new?

check the wire or plug.
