As you asked, don't go the sexual route. Even if it succeeds, it will last only so long. The deal is, you might be trying to force a relationship with him.
I don't know how much you differ from his 'ideal' style. What would be his desired girl like? Don't try to make yourself fit that ideal women, you will never be, and just frustrate yourself when you find out that you had changed and he doesn't appreciate it.
I don't know what he likes, activities and lifestyle. Is he an outdoor guy? an extreme adventures stuff? night clubs are his thing? Cars? I don't know, but if you find something that you also like (don't pretend to like parachuting to get his attention, and then get freaked out if he asks you to drop at I don't know which altitude with him), you might change his mind if he finds out he really is having fun with you. Although you might find out that you're labeled 'great friend' and you might never get past that image.

Take him to his favorite sporting event,or his favorite restaurant, that would sure get my attention (that also makes it seem like you care about him)
