You're wrong. It is possible for someone to commit adultery who isn't married. That is, if that person is not married but they are having sex with someone who is married to another person. That fits the dictionary definition of adultery.
I've grown up in Christian churches, so I know why Christians use this term loosely.
Many Christians consider any sex outside of marriage extramarital. That would include two people who aren't married having sex. They are doing it "outside of marriage" in many Christians eyes. Because they are not married, they shouldn't be having sex. It's considered extramarital by many Christians, and that fits the definition of adultery in some dictionaries, so perhaps that's the case.
Also, in the Ten Commandments it says you shouldn't commit adultery, and it doesn't use the word fornication, so maybe they just lump it all together from that. Although, the Bible does condemn fornication in other places.
Hope that helps.

Adultery is when a married man or woman has sex with someone other than their spouse. Fornication is what you are probably getting none of ; and no, your hand does not count. Just to let everyone know, if a married person is having sex with someone other than their spouse, he/she is actually both fornicating and committing adultery at the same time. Where did you people attend school?????
One last thing, please learn how to use spell check or going back to school would be a better idea. I can actually feel my IQ dropping as I read some of the remarks on the web/internet.

Adultery is commited by any one that is married it could be the man or the woman and dont mean that they have to lay down they can see some one and just let their mind wonder.
The both man and woman that is not married is committing fornication. If you have a married man and a single woman you are dealing with both fornication and adultery in one.

Adultery can also be committed by someone, not married, who is fornicating with a married person.
Mat 5:27 "You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery.
Mat 5:28 But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Mat 5:32 But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Well Id like to add to that if I could? Adultery usually relates to extra marital sex but, it also means to break a covenant. This is why God spoke about the Hebrews being "adulterers" not because they slept with someone elses wife, but because they broke the covenant. I do agree with you, just wanted to add a thought ;)
(ps.. thank you for the "best answer" thing but Im really not as rigid as you might think.... peace bro :) )

Adultery is when a married man or woman has coitus with someone who they are not married to.
Fornication is simply pre-marital intercourse.
Both bad ideas, not only because God wants us to hold our procreative powers in check and only use them when we are married, but also because of all of the nasty diseases which you may or may not contract.
