"If you hold to my teachings ..." - this is for followers of Jesus, usually. (A case can be made that similar teachers covered the rest of the planet with the same teachings - but different cultural slant.)
"then you will know the truth..." - once some one explains something to such a logical point that there is unanimous agreement and acceptance.
"the truth will set you free." - This freedom is from doubt and needless worry over issues that prevent growth. By living as true to these teachings - any tests that come your way, (ie interacting with people, machines failing at the worst time, etc.) you can deal with by use of these teachings. (being calm, not loosing your temper, etc.)
You are freer, you have a strong foundation to support you daily.

Hold my teachings is believing in them and trying to follow them. That means you pray, read the scriptures, and fellowship with other believers through worship and Bible studies. This is how you learn the truth of Christ's teachings. This Truth sets you free from living a sinful Life, gives you Peace of mind and Heart and allows you to see this World differently..not so deperately sinking, but one to live in and encourage more truth to be found by others.

The meanings of any of the sayings of Jesus are most easily understood when they're taken within the context in which they appear. More simply, read the whole chapter in order to get a proper understanding of what He is trying to get across. It's right there, in black and white...

The truth sets you free from sin...

When you tell the truth - as well as you know it and without guessing about surrounding circumstances and what they may mean - you're innocent of transgression... And that's a good thing...

Actually, proper interpretation of John 8:32 is: "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

We have already been "set" free to choose our path in life. The Truth here has reference not only to the facts surrounding Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God, but also to the Teachings that He brought. A genuinely saved and obedient follower of the Lord Jesus will know the divine truth and both freedom from sin and the search for reality. This divine truth comes not merely by intellectual assent, but by saving sommitment to Christ.

Preceding John 8:31 says: "Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My Word, you are My disciples indeed."

Real disciples of Jesus are not only learners, but also faithful followers and Teachers of the Word of God.

It means don't think, don't question, just do as I say and you will be free, honest. Free of independence, free of the real truth, free of critical thinking, free of the right to be yourself and not to follow meaningless rituals and beliefs. Free to suspend common sense and free of the need for evidence before fiction.

Doesn't cost you much, this freedom, does it?

I believe it means that once you start studying God's word and living and walking like Jesus then you will see the truth, and the truth is Jesus is real, He is our savior, He died for all of our sins so that our souls might be saved. We should share His word with others so that they might believe and be saved.

It also refers to false teachers. If we know what a specific person teaches, we will recognize an imposter. If we hold to His teachings, we will be free indeed.
