Just make sure you wear red horns and a red cape.
Seriously, I have gone a few times and in my local one the guy chanted on for about 50 minutes about being grateful (which I always am I hasten to add), including the gratefulness of washing machines and how we Don'talt have to wash at the river anymore (true). In between this we had to sing a song ( I mimed) and then eventually a lady with curly locks found Great Uncle George for the lady in the front seat.

There is very little difference to any other religious service except that instead of a sermon the medium conducting the service will, after some meditation point to some people in the congregation and ask them certain questions regarding someone who has passed on.
Sometimes they will be able to recognise who the person is that is connecting with the medium.
It is a clear case of, prove it you cannot, disprove it you cannot. Just go and see for yourself

I am not normally one for 'preaching' but my advice would be don't go. As a christian I believe the bible is very clear on mediums and spiritualism: steer well clear. There is very definitely a spiritual realm, but it ain't all good, and spiritualism is the 'dark side'.
I note from one of your other questions that you may be going through a tough time, but I really believe this is NOT the answer.
Really not meaning to be pious or judgemental - my motive is concern for your spritual and emotional wellbeing.
...oh and all the best with the dissertation - I've recently completed my Masters in Occupational Therapy

If like on my first visit then you'll realise that they're mostly cranks who haven't got a clue and you'll come away very disappointed.

Not sure. I do know they don't ask "Is anyone there"? Knock three tines for yes or once for no.
