I want to make the whole picture grey scale except my shirt. i want my shirt to still have color. how do i do that?

Hi,

You got to select the whole picture(ctrl+a), then select the custom selection tool, in the same dropdown as magic wand. Press and hold either ctrl or shift to substract an area. After closing your shape(mostly circle like or square like), inverse the selection from the "edit" menu so the software use only the outside area from your selection. Apply the black and white filter. This should do it.

Sorry I'm not too sure about the key, as I cannot verify the proper key at work.
