I often see joggers get to the corner and press that small button that is supposed to change the red light to green. Does it really work, can this one little button change the timing on that light? And if so, doesn't it affect the other traffic lights that are supposed to be synched with that light?

Yes but it is all processor controlled. It sets an interupt in the controller and then goes about monitoring the traffic flow and decides when it is safest to trigger the walk lite!

It enters into the computer that a pedestrian is wanting to use the crosswalk. This generally does two things... One, changes the light sooner, and Two keeps the light green longer to enable a slow pedestrian enough time to cross. But not always, as every intersection is a unique case with a unique set of parameters

BTW - pushing the button more than once is always, in all cases, a waste of time.

Pushing the button once suffices. It signals the light control that someone wants to cross. On busy streets I doubt that it immediately changes the light for the pedestrian. Never has for me. But I notice that if the pedestrian does not push the button, the Walk light won't shine.

I never really had much luck with those. It is suppose to shorten the time of the red and green lights.. maybe in NYC it actually works.. oh wait.. NYC runs by a whole different set of rules there when it comes to traffic, does it not.. At least that is what my friend who lived there told me .
No offense NYC!!

I think it is a cruel joke that the guys in signs and signals do to make you think it's safe to cross the street, especially the way the light starts to blink the instant your foot leaves the curb. I hope they get a kick out of it!

thats a pretty good ? i myself think they are just there to make pedestrians think that it will make the light change quicker, so they dont have anything to whine about. haha...its actually quite hilarious, the city tricking pedestrians, and most people actually thinking that it is working...lmao
