when I was working for a company I was backing into a driveway and ran over a small dog. I was driving a 10 ton truck hauling 3500 gallons of water. The truck made the dog look like a pancake with a wiggly tail still wiggling. Why do people think this is funny?

I think it is funny but only in the imagination of whoever hears he story.
I mean, c'mon! just by the way you just told this story of the little dog to illustrate your question you made me laugh!
But I guess it's like cruel humor... when you only hear it can be amusing to some, but I would like to think that once in the real scene, being a specific case, most people wouldn't find it funny at all.

That is never funny. I once hit a dog that darted into the street, even stomping on the brakes did not help. I felt terrible.

I don't think it's funny...I think it's tragic...and sad.
People who find that sort of thing amusing...probably beat their kids...
