Why do people think that educating children about sex is the same as condoning it?

How is knowing how to be safe and protect yourself the same as condoning sex.

Its like teaching your kids self defense is the same as telling them to go get into fights... Maybe they will (fight, or have sex)... but all you can do is hope that you have pointed them in the right direction, and that no matter what they will choose to be safe... I think it is child abuse to not educate kids about safe sex... Kids are doing more and more dangerous sexual acts now because they are trying to preserve their "innocence"

What happend?

The masses are becoming more and more ignorant with each passing year... Maybe we can get back to chastity belts, and shotgun weddings... What happeded to this country? We are being swallowed alive with stupidity, and unreasobable expections...

When I say education about sex I am mean how to be safe... I am not saying that you present the information as... "Now go out and start humping everything.." Part of the education is to explain about DISEASES and HOW THEY ARE CONTRACTED... Do you think that sexual education is this awesome porno romp where they just alk how fun and great if feels? It is to inform them.. .Guidance should be given, children should be encouraged to wait until the time is right (Marriage, college, etc). and to not give into pressure... but without knowledge they are left only to the "dont do it" argument - which has worked so well with drugs and other such vices...

Just because you dont Want your kids to have sex doesnt mean that they wont... and wouldnt you as a parent feel safer knowing that your child is informed on how to protect themselves... For Gods sake you are suppossed to be looking out for your children... Knowldege is the best protection there is...

I agree. Unfortunately, this has gotten so out of control that some people are even advocating that vaccines against sexually transmitted diseases (the Gardasil HPV vaccine) not be standardly given to young girls. This is something that prevents 80% of cervical cancers! And they're worried that it will encourage girls to has promiscuous sex! As many have noted, it's like saying having seat belts encourage people to drive more recklessly.

The sad reality is that keeping people ignorant gives their leaders (who are, in many cases, conservative religious power structures) more power.

Well, the truth is most people are afraid to talk about it, let alone educate their children. I've already had a discussion with my children, and it was not overly informative, but a starter because of their ages. The conversation will progress as they do in age. I think the more informed they are, the better decisions they should make. Not saying they always will. I agree that most people are stupid when it comes to educating their children about sex, that is why it is now taught at schools, and has been for quite some time. I would like to point out I do not like that, because it is my place as the parent to do so, and I am doing it. I agree also the world is being overrun with stupidity!

I don't see us ever going back in time. What is scary is some of the posts here. There are young children, coming on here to get information about sex or wanting to hook up or to "chat". Where are the parents while they use the computer? I think most of this comes from the computer. I don't believe most parents protect their kids from the porn and other things on them. Then there is TV. With shows like Jerry Springer, it is no wonder that it is becoming the norm for young girls to show their breasts to get beads. Yeah! He does that on his show! It is on at 10:00am here.
Though I am not a religious person, I do believe that we, as parents need to educate and follow through with that education. Not leave it to the schools or friends. I know I can't keep my children from experimenting when away from home. But, I can and do make sure that I know who they are with, what they will be doing and download software that can make it harder for them to access porn, etc.

You are so right in so many ways . but life changes all the time . Think back to are parents days .Then are days, time befor your children came life is going to change no matter what we we do. but it well be a fad that this generation will tire of and next generation will be battaling a diferent one. We cant stop life from evolving no matter how much we try and it is us as parents that in hope we have guided them well . So thy don't make such mortafing mistaks . you must remember this is a generation of children that grew up with no parents ,mostly to working parents, that have no time for their kids and have not got a clue what is going on with them . That their needs to be sussesfull is more important then there children and just give them what they whant, to make up for there absents . You can tell the ones that were brought upright they are out there working or going to school and colage and unaversity. So that is a lot of young adalts to make the changes in the next generation to come. Things will change this fad is fading fast . It is to much and to distructive . Give it time I have four kids and none of them went that way and through them I have meet alot of there friends and they are all vergins and their in there early twentys. so it is changing soon it will be cool to be a virgin .I have heard that girl started doing othere things ,so as not to lose their vegininty. It isn't great but it is getting better

Actually, you are speaking in ignorance. Im old, and aware of the pre-sex ed days. Before "safe sex" and our "culture of sex" it was shocking and astonishing for a 14 or 16 year old unmaried girl to become pregnant. Now its not shocking for 12 year old girls to become pregnant. NINE YEAR OLDS BECOME PREGNANT NOW. That is truly babies having babies. A nine year old (third grader) often cant multiply in math but they can learn about sex. Third graders have GANG RAPED each other.

Back in the day they DIDNT have the contraceptives, and they also didnt do those absolutely depraved behaviors. I think you are utterly wrong, and are towing the line of the "culture of sex" generation.

Remember that rebellion is the new conformity. If they sell your clothes in the mall, it means you arent inventing something new, you are buying into a brand. That doesnt make you enlightened, and it can sometimes improve the chance that you are more sheep-like than you may suspect.

Because when atheists try to educate our children about sex, they teach them that nothing is wrong, everything should be tried at least once, and a little piece of latex is enough to protect them from all danger.

"Safe Sex"? Abstinence is the safest sex - it will never give you a disease or cause pregnancy. Why isn't it taught in schools? Because if teenagers, in the middle of hormonal chaos, can control themselves, then adults have no excuses for not controlling their own actions.

Abstinence doesn't cause kids to try more dangerous acts - telling them to go ahead and have sex now does.

I don't think this. I am very open and honest with my 2 kids (ages 11 and 8) The other day my 11 yr old daughter asked me what virginity was and I explained it to her. I think that if I stay open with them and don't judge them when they talk to me, they'll tell me things most kids won't tell their parents. I also don't freak out about nudity, I tell them that the body is a work of art created by God and that it is the entertainment industry that has made it all about sex.

Isn't it condoning it? By educating them and preparing them to have sex, aren't you basically giving them permission to have sex? How about educating them in the disappearing art of abstinence?
