What cultures or religious institutions in which countries do female circumcision?

This is really popular in Africa. I know why this came into practice but it just sounds incredibly painful and the women need to speak out.

For anyone who doesn't know, a female circumcision is performed on a female at a young age. The lips are removed and the hole is sewn up except for enough to urinate from. When the girl marries, her husband FORCES himself into her, ripping open the hole. It causes a LOT more bleeding than a person who has not had a F.C. and it can cause nerve damage. This procedure happens a LOT in the U.S. as well, from people who grew up with the tradition in their homeland. Wives will make their daughters have one done because it was doen to them. A lot of times, the procedure is not even done with sterile tools, or is done in unsanitary locations.

Sometimes it is done again after a woman has her first child to keep her tight. Really sick practice. No fe Muslims do this, it is more in the Arabic communities, like in Africa and the Middle East.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) are done in Africa, the Middle East & Far East. FGM is a social custom, not a religious practice. However, in those Muslim countries where it is practice, FGM is often justified by a controversial saying attributed to the Prophet Mohammed that seem to favor sunna circumcision. The authenticity of these sayings are unconfirmed, and some scholars have refuted them. Even if true, they only permit the practice; they do not mandate it.

Africa is the largest practitioner of female circumcision.

Female circumcision is nothing more than psychologically and physically scarring genital mutilation. It involves cutting off the clitoris of a young girl, with no anesthesia and a sharp object (although, as a poster below pointed out, it can also be done by sewing the lips of the vagina together). It is usually done by the women in the community for fear of adultery or lust.

It is horrible practice in this day and age.

I was told the middle eastern countries, do this after a woman gives birth to thier first child. Mind set being that they don't want the woman to be able to achieve sexual satisfaction, in all essence keeping her from ever cheating on her husband who is allowed to have several wives.It eliminates being able to get back at them.

You can't do it on girls in Islam Prophet Muhammad PHUH said so himself. Islamic law protects a woman's right to sexual enjoyment. So that guy who answered first is wrong. But in Africa mainly they do it. The World Health Organization doesn't allow it and they are trying to stop in Africa and in other countries.
