best I ever had (hole in the wall or not) was a tiny place in nogales mexico. I had the chili Relleno and it was like an explosion in my mouth. Absolute perfect balance of heat, cheese and sauce. It wasnt a dish, it was an experience.

I was in Chinatown in San Francisco years ago. Wanted to eat but so many restaurants to choose from. I stood on the corner in the middle of Chinatown and watched. All of the tourist looking people were headed into those fancier restaurants on the main drag. Where were the the Asians going? I followed some of them to this tiny, three story restaurant called Sam Wo. It's very narrow, just wide enough for tables down each side and a narrow aisle in between. You enter the ground floor through the kitchen, past the cooks, and up the stairs as the dining rooms are on the 2nd and 3rd levels. The tables are well worn and the waitress? Oh my, she should have her own tv series. Loud, brassy, almost rude in a friendly sort of way. A shocker at first but once you get used to it you just kind of sit back and enjoy the show. Know what I mean? Anyway, every time I'm in San Francisco I go there. Great, I mean Great, Chinese food and incredibly low prices. If you ever get there, try it out. I heartily recommend it.

This Mexican restuarant in Monrovia, CA (outside of Los Angeles).

A Health Inspector was there once. Someone in the kitchen said "What do you mean we failed!?!?!" The food was so good that everyone, including me, kept eating.

Ortlieb's in Philadelphia. The beer was cheap, the burgers were the size of a steering wheel, and the live jazz bands would make John Coltrane get up and jam. We would go there after finals.

Then the yuppies took over. Valet parking, foie de gras....it all went down hill.

The Steel Trolley Diner in Lisbon, Ohio. It's an authentic 50's style diner and has good burgers and what they call "the basket of REAL fries" (after 20 years, I still don't know what that means).

P.S. It was featured on a Food Network show called "The Best Of: Diners".
