Henna, or mehndi, is a natural dye from a plant. It has been used for centuries by East Asians and Africans as well as Middle Eastern cultures. It can be used to dye skin and hair and nails. The color you get depends on the color of your hair/ skin (whatever you are dying) as well as the henna you use. The color can range from orange, to red, to deep brown. Make sure you test a small area first, the longer you keep it on, the darker the color you will get.
you can buy henna in powder form at an Indian store, and maybe some beauty supply stores carry the henna shampoo, which is easier.
If you get it from the indian store in powder form, mix it into a paste with water and lemon juice, with the consistency of pancake batter, then apply to hair, keeping away from skin--unless you want a reddish brown scalp or ears! The paste will dry up and become flaky, but leave it on (it smells, you may not like it). Wash it out, and use shampoo to get it out good.
I suggest going for the shampoo version, won't be so messy/hard/smelly.
Good luck!
