smoked mackerel and it is a marvellous fish. Full of Omega 3 oils, tasty and meaty and it makes a great pate to serve on toast. And just for information, an Arbroath smokie is a smoked haddock, hot smoked whole, unopened and undyed as opposed to a Finnan haddock, smoked cold and opened (both very tasty and healthy to eat)

Smoked mackerel - always comes as fillets, tastes great hot or cold, and makes brilliant pate. It can often be obtained with the addition of spices, such as black pepper, or chili flakes.
Kippers are herring, split, salted and smoked.
Buckling are gutted, but not split, herring salted and smoked. Common in Scandinavia, but difficult to get in U.K. apart from in tins.
Arbroath smokies, are gutted haddock, salted and smoked and made exclusively in the Arbroath area of Scotland.
Other preserved fish include bloaters, and red herring neither of which are very easy to obtain these days but were popular in days gone by.
