Karate is Japanese and Tae Kwon do is Korean.
Tae kwon do focuses more on kicking than on hand techniques however there are many hand techniques in Tae kwon do, but if you meet someone that studies TKD only you will notice that they are better with their feet than they are with their hands.
Karate is just the same but they focus more on hands techniques.
they both have great techniques and both are good with their hand and feet it's just what they like to focus on more that makes a big difference.
they are both GREAT for your 7 year old son, he can compete in both if he'd like to, just show him the differences and ask him which one he thinks he would like best.
Tae Kwon do is an Olympic sport and Karate is not, but both are competitive.
there is nothing wrong with doing both as long as he can tell the difference and that shouldn't be to difficult as long as his instructors know what they are talking about and teach him well.
if you want to learn more about Tae kwon do you can go to www.wtf.org.
and for karate you can go to www.wkf.net
hope this help a little, good luck!

I like the answer that lisvad gave you.
It sums up the two differences very well. My 11 year old son and I teach Karate and I have a nephew who does Tae-Kwon-Do. The TKD classes seem to be more geared for sport and cost alot more. The Karate classes will help later in life with real life self defense.
Go and look at the Karate Dojo and the TKD Dojang and see which your son prefers. If he isn't interested in it then he won't stick with it. Most good school will give him a free class so he can try it out.
Have fun!

KARATE
Tae Kwon Do
Sorry, had to help you out with the correct spelling.
One of the answers you received noted that Jr. instructors are not good teachers. I disagree. In TKD (tae kwon do), we are all teachers just as we are all students. As a student progresses, they pass their knowledge on to those who are at a lower level. In our school, we learn from each other. That's not to say that our instructor doesn't teach us. We have many black belt instructors.
The best way to determine whether a school is good or not is to speak to it's instructors, it's students, and the parents of students. You want an instructor that takes an interest in the students outside of the school. I know many young children who are incredible martial artists. Most noteworthy is a 9 year old who will test to become a black belt at the end of this year. It is amazing to see a child be able to hold their own with an adult.
My children are in TKD, as am I. We love it.

True Karate originates from OKINAWA not Japan. And is empty handed and iron strong with it's power stances and powerful punch's and low kicks. Tae Kwon Do is Korean in origin and is represented with powerful explosive kicks to keep opponents at a distance, coupled with many karate style ridge hand techniques and powerful but limited punches. I would say that overall, unless you can find a true sensei in either style (particularly one who immigrated from either Japan(karate) or Korea(tae kwon do) Don't even waste your time or money on a school that's illegitimately teaching these arts. Choose your Sensei WISELY. Good Luck!

when i see people who take tkd, they usually do it because they want some place to hang out, or they are really into point sparring. don't expect your child to get really strong, because usually the "junior instructors" can't even do a pushup.
if the karate school just says "karate," ask them what style they are. if they respond with "tiger shouman's", don't let your kid take classes there. There are many good karate styles, including isshin ryu, goju ryu, kyokushin, even shotokan. o, shotokan is what tkd is really based on. hope this helps.
