To me spoiling a child is giving in to them so they stop screaming and throwing a tantrum.
I was told many times with my second baby that I spoiled him, no I didn't spoil him he just wanted me to hold him and no one else, it didn't bother me and I loved holding him to me I think they were just upset because he wouldn't let anyone else hold him. He's 8 now and surely doesn't want to be held and he knows if he wants something he has to work in order to get that it just doesn't get handed over to him.

Something that is "spoiled" is something that has been put up on a shelf to rot. A child who is held and given attention and has their needs responded to is not spoiled, no matter how many people tell a new mom "don't hold him too much....don't respond to every cry...etc. or you'll spoil him." Things that are spoiled are NOT given attention and instead of thriving, they spoil.

There are many aspects to spoiling. Unfortunately, children are very smart at a very young age and they know what they are doing when they throw fits and tantrums etc. Mine would at 6 months go right back to what I told them not to touch until I popped their hands and then they didn't touch it again. That told me right there that they knew what they were doing.
When you give a child what they want instead of what they need all the time you are spoiling them. If you give in to a child when they cry and pitch a fit then you are spoiling them.
Since I wasn't around your child and you then I would not know if what you did was considered spoiling or not.

My husband says I spoil my son rotten! And I probably do! He is my only child and he was hit by a truck crossing the road when he was 10 and since then I cherish every second with him and I tend to give him all I can give him and I do tend to let him get away with things! My hubby was 16 years military also and he yells and has a fit over the smallest things-like candy wrapper under bed! ALL TEENS HAVE CANDY WRAPPERS UNDER THEIR BED! So i figure my hubby picks at him and yells at him enough that I refuse too cuz it will seem like we r ganging up on him! He's my baby and thats what kids r for-spoiling! GOD I HOPE SO ANYWAY! lol

To me spoiling a child is giving him/her whatever they want and/or ask for. Spoiling has nothing to do with hugs or physical displays of affection and anybody who says that you are spoiling a baby by holding it is just ridiculous!

Spoiling also means allowing the child to grow up with expectations that people are going to assume he/she is wonderful, talented, etc.which, of course, is an unrealistic expectation!

Spoiling means that the child hasn't been taught that the world doesn't owe him/her a thing, but that he/she must go out and earn what they want in life. They aren't going to be handed whatever their little hearts desire just because they have a nice smile or good looks.

I agree with you since everyone says that I spoil my son, but I don't feel I do. yes he has alot of toys and I hold him alot and stuff... BUT if he throws a fit I don't give him what he wants... he gets told no and either a spank on the Butt or time out.. he's only 19 months old time out doesn't always work loL!!! I wish people would just stay out of it!! your son seemed to turn out okay!!

I think holding a child too much means holding them so that they are incapable of being independent. It's important for children to learn how to do things on their own and interact with other people. If they're little and need the security of knowing you're there, it's perfectly fine. Besides, you don't get that sort of bonding time when they're older.
