Okay, here's the scoop.

You can immigrate to canada using a variety of "classes" ... i.e. business, family, student, etc.

With one exception, covered below, you have to file the application forms from outside of Canada, and wait for permanent residency to be approved before moving. That will take anywhere from 1-3 years or more, depending on which class you apply under. If you are hired by an employer in canada who files the applicatin for you, it will be 6-12 months.

The exception is, if you are married. If you are married, you can get a visitors visa to move to Canada to be with your spouse, then file for permanent residency from within Canada. However, you are not able to work. You may be able to apply for a work visa, which would take 6+ months. Also, you cannot appeal the decision made when applying from within Canada.

Here is the official Canadian Immigration website, that tells you everything you need to know. It is very clear and concise and easy to understand. All application forms ae available from te website.

Good Luck!

Check with Immigration Canada -- and check with your girlfriend. If she's interested in marriage, that will help a lot. On the other hand, she might want to come to the US...
If you are a US citizen, and you have a trade or profession, it isn't very hard to get into Canada. You don't say anything about Canadian citizenship, so is all you want a green card? In any case, check with Immigration and get the scoop.
