If one or both of your parents are alcoholics, you may be more prone to becoming one, but it won't happen unless unless you drink repeatedly over a period of time.

Imitating their behavior is a more likely cause than genetics.

Neither of my parents drank until I came along.

I have alcoholism on both sides of my family, but my Dad is an alcoholic. He's been sober for 3 years now and has been going to AA. I'm 23, and you just have to remember that when you drink you have to be careful and be very conscious of it. I think it's okay to drink, but once you start getting into one of you parent's drinking habits, then you should stop. I drink, but I worry about becoming an alcoholic, but I don't exhibit the signs yet. If I ever do, I'll stop drinking forever. At this point, howevver, I don't drink that much anyway.

both recoverig, yes, they havent drank in years, but i was around it constantly as a kid, i went to school, went to their place of work, then to the bar, and thats where i fell asleep on a regular basis, i have worried about if i would become one, and i gues the best thing to say is know your self, and your limits, if you really really like to drink and have a family history of alcohol abuse, then if you drink, limit your self to once a week, or everyother week, dont give your self the chance to be taken in, and dont run for it everytime there is a problem, or you are upset, find other things that you can also do. this may not be the answer you are looking for, but this has sure worked for me!
