taxis are way too expensive...

If you are planning to stay within metro LA, then the MTA services can get you anywhere you'd like to go. If you are looking to extend your travel outside of the metro LA area, then the MetroLink will be the best option as they can take you as far inland as Oxnard, Lancaster, San Bernardino, and Oceanside. Any farther than that and you'll be looking at Amtrak.

OK, my answer is:

Don't take the train (dangerous/dicey)
Consider a cab (depending on how long a drive it is)
Walk if it is a short distance

on the back of a bum. there's more bums than taxi's and you only have to pay them with some cheap box wine.

Ignore Crystal's advice.

The subway system and train lines are excellent.

MTA buses are your next option.

Cabs are few and far in between in L.A.
