Depending on your budget, if you do not play a lot of high-end computer games a $450 - $650 laptop will be sufficient because laptops usually don't have a long lifespan.

Get a Compaq with a Turion 64 proccesor. They are fast and reliable. Compaq also has a lot of multimedia features. Few laptops have those features. Macbooks from apple are nice aswell, you can't go wrong with a Mac. Which ever you decide be sure to get the extended warantee, they're expensive to repair.
