Most any dog you've given proper house training and has been socialized with people, or other animals living in your home. You have a easier shot of having this if you get a new puppy, and especially if you get your pup from from a reputable breeder, who knows what he/she has bred into the dog. Both of mine were from shelters; one was gotten at 8 wks. and I sought training immediately, as I got the idea real fast, she was going to outsmart me. I took her to pet stores, parks, to my school, to out of town family (maybe not the best idea!). I trained her my cats were royalty. I got the other one at 8 mos., as a resue and what a psychological mess, requiring years I really hadn't meant to spend undoing the damage. Even he was house trained, socialized and wouldn't dream of causing any damage to his happy home. Most people adore my dogs and they are welcomed places.

try to get a calm, small dog. shih-tzus are generally pretty good, and schnauzers are too. usually the more hyper ones tend to be poodles, pomeranians, or westies.

HOWEVER, it's not really the breed of dog that matters in messing up things and being nice to people; it's a matter of how you train them and how you take care of them.

Currently, we have a miniature daushund and he is great. He is personable, loving, and not messy. We had him trained outside and in before he was a year old and he listens great. We also had a Llasa Apso in our past and he was the same. Mild tempered and easy to train. I would go for those two and standard Daushunds are as great as the minis.

A Shih-Tzu. A Yorkie. A poodle. A shnauzer. Any puppy is going to chew for a while, and will need house training. Crate train it.
