Linux is split into several distributions or distros. Each distro is different, although many distros are based on other distros. Distros vary by what software they include and what any defaults are.

If you are starting out, you may want to try Ubuntu, its a good distro for beginners. In the downloads section, choose a nearby mirror and download the ISO. Then burn the ISO to CD using a "Burn Disc Image" option. Then boot the computer from CD.

When it gets booted, you will actually be able to try out Ubuntu on your computer before you remove your XP install. Try it first to see if you like it. If you do like it, there will be an option to install Ubuntu to the hard drive.
