I was taught as a child that Amish people don't use electricity. I've learned in my adult life that many of the things my parents taught me as a child were wrong. Not that I was brainwashed, just that my parents might not have had all the facts.
So if you are reading this and you are Amish, are you using electricity. If so, is this permissible?
I sometimes see Amish people at McDonalds. McDonalds uses electricity, so indirectly the Amish person(s) are eating food that was prepared using electricity.
Was there ever a time in American history were Amish choose not to use electricity, and if so, has this been reversed? Are there still pockets of Amish that do not allow the use of electricity.

I am not Amish but I have known a few of them during my time in southern Ontario. They have a lot of different sects. You can think of a main division between them as the old order and new order, Old order are the horse buggy people. No cars, electricity, etc. They basically turned their backs on the modern world. Then there is the new order. Cars, tractors, computers, combines. They use every piece of tech that they can lay their hands on. They only rule that it is for business not for fun. So no, not Yahoo answers. But definitely the news and the market reports, and the finances and the planning. Education is even an accessed resource. There are all sorts of degrees of modernization between these two extremes. To bad you were not getting answers from any of the Amish.

I don't see any answers here, so although I am not Amish, I choose to answer this with the limited knowledge that I have.I live where there are many Amish, German Baptists and Dunkkards. They use electricity in their barns these days, and in work places, but in their homes they do not. The older generation do not approve of their children using computers even in school, mostly the internet is what bothers them (gee I wonder why?) They usually go to the 8th grade and then are taken out of school to go to work. By the way, they are very nice people overall, their children are well mannered, and at least in this area the teacher that we have teaching in their school gives each child she teaches as much education as they want or can handle - she teaches high school information to children knowling they will not get it after the 8th grade. Many are extremely bright children.

Amish people do not believe in Modern technology. They do not drive cars, use electricity. A law requires that all Horse buggies to have the red reflector on the back.. the amish were angry about that.

We have Amish a couple of hours from us. They do not have electricity and they do not use the internet. However I am sometimes surprised at how liberal they are. Some of them do things that our church is against.

Amish are probably some of the nicest people in the world. They seem frozen in time to us. And they may be. But they don't bother anyone, actually they help us all a lot. Much of our food supply still comes through the Amish farms. These people deserve to be left alone.

They can use other peoples electricity, drive in other peoples cars but they can't own the stuff.
Seems a bit hypocritical to me

I think that they are able to use electricity and use modern conveniences during their period of rumspringa and the intent is to make sure that they are making in informed consent into the church. The belief that they practice that I find as one to respect is their belief in separation of Church and state.
