It's the idea that people will be able to have faith in something/someone. It gives people hope in a "hopeless" world. There are too many questions that need answers, and for some, religion offers the answers that many seek. For some, it's a means of solace when the rest of the world wants to drag you down. And, for others, it's just a tradition that they've been dragged into. I think if you are getting only what you, personally, are looking for out of a religion, then you are doing what is right for you. No one should judge that.

The ultimate purpose of religion is to be able to live forever because no one wants to die. At this time, the only way to be immortal is through our children and grandchildren. In actual practice tho we go out and kill others who don't believe exactly as we do. It has always been this way and forever shall be.

(wow don't you ask alot of questions? :P)
religions main purpose is to help bring people together and unite them, to be able to get a relationship with god, and be able to feel good about yourself and others, although that's the goal and purpose, many religions fail to do so, and only cause war and pain. its a sad fact, hopefully things will turn around soon... unfortunately it still looks very bleak for most of Christendom especially.

Not to get dragged into the world of darkness and that there is someone up there watching us.And of course to be spiritual.
But many people are fighting war for power, dominance possessions etc in the name of religion and God.

i think that the basic idea is to give people hope and a reason to live, and to answer questions that humans dont know the anwers to. however i think that has been strampled on many billion times by stronger ones like money, desire for control, desire to convert others because there is strength in numbers, greed, the need to feel superior, etc.

I don't think there is a definitive answer to that.. that is as subjective as people are. Ask me you'll get one answer, someone else will give you an entirely different answer. That type of question depends entirely on the perception of the individual and what types of beliefs they hold. A thousand people could answer and all the answers would be different.
