Yes, he was right to treat them. It would be unethical to not treat someone. Also, PTSD was not understood at that time, nor were its long lasting effects. Certain elements of war were very different in WWI than in other wars. Battles could rage for days or weeks, rather than hours. There was more artillery, more noise, more ways to get killed than ever before. All these contributed to higher stress levels than were seen in previous wars.
Right now we can say that PTSD is a real disorder. Back then, it could have also been (and was) taken as malingering, dereliction, or otherwise by those who didn't understand it.
So, yes, he was right to treat them. He was right to record the treatment, and to make others aware of the problem. Today, it probably would not be right to return the soldiers to the front.

why wouldn't it be? The same reasoning could be used for alcoholics or drug addicts, would you then not treat an addict? The purpose of the doctor is to treat the condition, what the person does afterwards is not the doctor's concern.
Should a person on death row be treated for a broken wrist? They're just going to be killed anyway. The answer is yes, treat everyone.

Either way they probably would have been sent back. So its better to treat them and send them back semi-well then to send them back completely ill.
