Hi there...you can get different wood chips to put on your BBQ which give of different flavours, as they burn they give off smoke which will lightly smoke the meat. I don't think it would be as intense a flavour as using a smoker. I haven't had time to check it out as I have to zoom out but I seem to remember my gran doing some smoking in a dry pan using loose tea leaves. She used to have the chicken or ham in a metal basket and put it in the pressure cooker so she could have the lid down tight.

Killer Smoked Turkey on the Grill!!

Have your husband take a hacksaw to cut the turkey in two halves. It isn't as hard as it seems, just be sure it is thawed all the way through.
Next, marinate the turkey in 1/3 part cheap red wine, 1/3 oil, and 1/3 teriyaki sauce or soy sauce or worchestershire sauce. The teriyaki works well for us. Marinate at least 24 hours.
Wrap the turkey halves in foil boats but leave open at the top so they get the smoke. It doesn't take more than an hour for them to cook all the way on the grill and less if you put directly on the grill without the foil. When sliced it will look pink like beef tenderloin and some people think it doesn't even taste like turkey more like tenderloin, but all beg for more and I never have any left!!!

Yes there is amigo... you can use a gasgrill or charcoal. fisrt all you have to do is cook the meat in a oven for half the normal cooking time. or maybe a little less. You can smoke the rest on in-direct cooking on yer grill. get half of the cooking surface of your grill hot and make a smoking pack with a large rectangular piece of thick foil , fill it with soaked hickory chips, messquite, or apple wood is real good. cover the pack up good and poke holes in it with a fork several, to let smoke out. put the half baked turkey on the cool side of the grill and shut it and let the smoke and in-direct heat cook it the rest of the way. by the way, i may may have neglected to say, put the foiled soaked chips on the grate not on the coals. let them start smoking before you put on the turkey...... close it and don't go peeking at it , let it cook, everytime you raise the lid, smoke and heat escape and makes cooking time longer...the skin will be a nice dark to golden brown, and another pointer is, inject the meat with a marinade or just plain water to make moist.... good luck.

I have used my grill to smoke turkey for years. You need to use wood chips made for this purpose. Soak in water or wine or beer for 1/2 and hour, drain and place in foil pan on top of hot coals. Prepare the turkey as desired and place in deep foil tin which. Wrap foil over the turkey and vent (as you would for the oven). Place on the grill on low heat for 6 -8 hours. yummmmm

You can use mesquite wood chips or hickory wood chips (the ones safe for grilling). They'll give your turkey a smoky flavor. Smoked turkey sounds great!

How are you going to keep the turkey lit while you're trying to smoke it? You can but I'm not sure of the proper way to.

I do know how to smoke chicken breast without a barbecue, just using a pan, but don't know if it's working for a (complete?) turkey:
