I've heard that shibas, rather than bark, just scream like a tortured three-year-old child. I'm not sure if this is a reason to avoid getting one, or a really cool perk. If they do, how irritating is it to the owner? How about the neighbors?

GitEmGang:
"...instead of barking he is more apt to purr, yodel or even to [scream] like a panther — a vocalization he employs when he wants to register his objection to doing something contrary to his nature, like walking on a leash." -- Dog and Kennel Magazine
Asking for more information about something I read in a reputable magazine doesn't make me gullible. It makes me curious. And after reading other answers, you calling it a "granny tale" reflects very poorly on your understanding of the subject.

I own a shiba inu and yes they have a much higher pitch bark that could sound more like a scream... however the only time my dog ever makes this sound is when shes really excited to see me when i come home and its actually really cute. Besides that they dont really make many other sounds so its not at all irritating to the owner or the neighbors. I would really recommend getting a shiba inu. Of all the different kinds of dogs if seen and had... shibas are my favorite.

However they have a very cat-like personality and are very good hunting dogs. So... the only reason you would want to avoid getting one would be if you have other smaller pets like a bunny or bird or something like that that could have contact with the shiba.

I'v never heard of a shiba inu screaming. Your best bet is to either find a breeder or a vet and ask them about it. The only thing that I noticed abount them is that they are very hyper dogs. But they are really cute. I'd get one if I could.

Quite a number of dog breeds can & will scream. Fortunatly most only will do so under extream furstration or when in pain. Many owners are unaware their dog can scream.
ANd yes it's irritating to all within earshot.
