My wife who is deaf suffers the same way. She uses a hot cloth on her neck along the tub leading out of the base of the ear. This causes the dried mucus that accumulates during the flight to flow and the air to equalize in the inner ear. Sometimes chewing gum or yawning does the same thing.

Careful not to burn yourself. It should be like the hot cloth they give when flying first class. Usually you can ask the flight attendant for a one. Just be sure to do it before descending. If the whole sinus seems blocked and painful - then vapory throat lozenges or candy such peppermint, menthol, or mint would help. Again a hot cloth on the forehead or below the eyes would also help.

Basically the dry air on the airline causes the mucus to dry and block air passages. (Drinking fluids during the flight can help prevent this.) These must be freed before descending or the air pressure differences will cause pain. Actually popping is a good thing - signally that the passage is free and air pressure equalized.

Hope this helps.

I used to have this problem when I was young. My ears used to pop when we were landing and I used to be in so much pain.

To start off with my mum used to make me suck on a hard sweet and hold her hands over my ear to lessen the pain.

But then we discovered a medicine called affrine (sorry can't remember how it is spelt). It was a nasal spray for children with this problem, you spray an hour before take off and an hour before landing. It worked well for me till i out grew the problem.

I sympathise with your son's problem because I know first hand how painful it is. I recommend you go to a pharmacists or doctor to get advice about a nasal spray to stop the pain.

Take a deep breath, pinch nose and holding puffed out cheeks swallow, wriggle your jaw.

Its what you do to equalise your ears when you are scuba diving... there is a membraine in your ears... if the pressure either side is not equal it stretches and thats what hurts doing this opens the air passages to your ears and equalises the air... or something like that.

Practice it now and try and make your ears pop

If you have a cold it gets bloked and you cant do it... sudafed may help or other decongestant... just never us it while scuba diving (you would not want it to wear off underwater)

Chewing gum is the smart way to lift off, and land on an airplane, without your ears from popping.

I've found in my years of being a pilot that hard candy like peppermints, butterscotch, ect. works well if you don't like gum. If you keep clearing your ears on the way up and on the way down you should have no problems. Most cabin's pressure is only set to 5k-7k ft. Gum is still the best but hard candy can work well also.

When I was little my sister and I used to scream the house down because our ears would hurt on plane journeys. My mum used to tell us to put cotton wool in each of our ears for the duration of the journey and only take it out when we were back in the airport. I don't know why but it used to work and we would sit there a lot more relaxed. Perhaps it was a psychological thing?

Try it with your son but you have to sound convincing when telling him it will stop the pressure.

Hope it helps!

Have him chew gum it keeps the jaw moving and it doesn't allow that pressure to build up in the ear. Also make sure he's not congested either that will cause ear pain too.

Chewing gum puts pressure on your eardrums, and due to this the pressure from the air when your plane is lifting off or landing, is comprimised and your ears dont pop!
