definitely a sparrow...but would need a full body view to try and narrow down species. Is this a wild bird? What part of the country are you in? Could be a Savannah Sparrow, a Song Sparrow...or maybe a few others.

I won't know the exact species unless I had wing bars and size to help me out. I have two guesses though. If it's a large bird, it could be a type of introduced quail called a Japanese quail. They were introduced in the south USA, though they've not done very well out there. Out of my two choices, this is the least likely.
The other option is it's a type of sparrow. Again, I won't know the species unless I had wing bars, size and chest feathers to inspect. Sorry :(

I believe that is a Savannah or Song sparrow, but I cannot be positive (almost certain though), because the picture is so small and lacks a lot of detail. Here are some links providing pictures and information about the Savannah and song sparrow: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Song_Sparrow_dtl.html , http://content.ornith.cornell.edu/UEWebApp/images/MPR_080602_100036_L.jpg , http://www.birds.cornell.edu/BOW/SONSPA/ , .http://www.birds.cornell.edu/BOW/SAVSPA/ , http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/framlst/i5420id.html , http://www.enature.com/flashcard/show_flash_card.asp?recordNumber=BD0311 .
I will say though, with those unbroken stripes at the neck, it looks more like the Savannah sparrow.
Is the bird still alive and in your possession? If so you may find care and feeding instructions at my website : http://www.starlingrescueandcare.bravehost.com (site targeted at sparrows as well as starlings, but care and feeding instructions will also apply to most songbirds, except the pigeon). You may post to the website forum if you have any questions or concerns.
Hope this helps!
Sincerely, Audra
