Try to squeeze it. If it has a little give, it's ripe. If it has more than a little it's ready to be used, promptly.

If you shake the avocado & the seed inside is loose, this is one way to tell it's ripe.

The skin has turned black and it yields to the touch easily. If the skin has shriveled, this is OVER ripe.

if it yields slightly to gentle pressure,then it is ripe.
If pressing leaves a large dent, the avocado is overripe, but suitable for mashing.

Poke a little, it may not be too soft but also not too firm..
It feels little like the inside of your hand is feeling.
