Let her know that you and your dad will do a lot of the work/care involved in having a 2nd dog: walking, feeding, playing, cleaning up after it, brushing/ grooming, taking care of shots, etc. She may also be worried about the added expense (food, dog toys, vet. bills, etc).

Your mom may feel she's already doing a lot of the work with the dog you already have and may worry she'll be "put upon" by adding another dog to your household.

Let her know that you'll choose the dog carefully to be sure it and the one you have now will get along. That's an important fact to think about ahead of time.

If you are considering another dog, please go to your local shelter and adopt a homeless one. You can even take your dog along with you and see how it reacts with the ones you are considering. I know, because they allow this at our local shelter!!

Good luck!!

I went through this exact same experience! I tried telling my mom that i would take full responsibility of both the dogs but that didn't really work because she didn't believe me.

So instead i started telling her how much better it would be if my dog had a playmate since we were gone so much of the time and how our dog wouldn't be as needy since it wouldn't need our attention 24-7.

After a while of getting a little used to the idea my dad and i just bought a dog we fell in love with, without my mom being there. My mom soon began loving that second dog more than the first. Believe me... if your mom is a dog person then there is no way she could turn down the face of an innocent little puppy.

Good Luck by the way and I hope you get your second dog!

I acquired a second dog about a year and half ago. We were already discussing getting a second dog when the owners of my dog's sister decided to get rid of her because they did not have enough time for her. While having a second dog is more costly (you go through twice as much food, vet bills are twice as much, you need twice as many leashes, as much shampoo, etc.) it has had it's benefits. Now, I don't have to worry about the fact that I work and don't have as much time with my dogs, because they have each other, so they aren't lonely. They also exercise each other, and it is fun having their different personalities. Ranger is such a boy who wants to run and play fetch and do tricks for you, the kind of dog I have always wanted. Snickers, on the other hand, wants to be petted all the time. It is nice being able to walk outside and throw the frisbee for Ranger while I give Snickers a 15 min. belly rub. Having 2 dogs isn't necessarily for everyone, training with a second dog is harder, Ranger nearly completely regressed when we got Snickers, but we have gotten both of them nearly fully trained now, after only a year and a half. My mom didn't want a second dog either, but now that we have her, she really enjoys it.

well i've had this experience before...i kno how u feel! What i found 2 work best is 2 write a short "letter" that states how much u and ur dad really want a dog and how responsible u'll b w/ the dog....if u don't get a response soon...try crying and then write another, more sincere letter! trust me it should work!

PS, i did get the dog i wanted!

just buy and bring it home..she will definately make noise about it..thats for sure..thn u explain to her that how lonely your collie will be if she left alone at home when everyone is out. then u assure her you will take responsibility for the new puppie..and you are already grown up and what to learn to take responsibility.
make sure you mean what you say..she will probly continue nagging..but if your act speak louder then words, she notice it..it will..then its already too late..it has become one of your family member..make sure the new member will not be a nusiance to her..good luck

Your dog that you have now might want a play mate, you can say. And two dogs are better than one. Companionship is important.

Find a dog that has had a pathetic life and make your mom pity it so she'll get it.

You could tell her that your current dog gets lonely, and that another dog would keep her company.
