i'm not thinking it's a good idea to try and treat it yourself.
take him to a doctor and request no pills. i do this all the time just because i can't stand taking pills anymore. they have EVERYTHING in liquid form (or shots. sorry.)!

Sounds like you need to take him to a doctor, which, I think should be a last resort in most cases. However, malnutrition and lactose sensitivity can be signs of food allergy/intolerance. Try not giving him dairy or wheat - these seem to be the worst offenders, from what I've heard. I've also heard that green stools and a bright red itchy rash around the rear end can be signs of pretty bad food allergy. This intolerance to whatever the offendig substance may be also prevents the absorption of nutrients, maybe? This could contribute to the poor weight gain. Trying diet modification is cheaper than taking him to a doctor, if you're dead set against it. There's tons of stuff on the web about food allergy. Hope this helps.

I would have to agree with the Pediatrician answer. I have a 5 year old daughter that is very skinny also. She weighs 37 lbs and her pediatrician has put her on Pediasure twice a day to get some weight on her and the nutrients she needs. Him being lactose intolerant I don't know if he could drink that or not, but you can find out. Each glass (1cup) has 250 calories in it and is loaded with vitamins and minerals to keep them healthy. You can add ice cream to it and make it even more fattening. I hope you find the answer you need. I don't know anything about worms but if you think he has them then you need to take him to the doctor without hesitation.

Yes dogs and cats can transfer worms to a child if they are not regularly wormed(the animal that is) as their eggs will get under the childs nails then the child puts their fingers in their mouth and voila worms.
There is no natural treatment for worms i am afraid only over the counter remedies such as a tablet taken once then 2 weelks later or a liquid drink known as pripsm(not sure of spelling sorry) remember tablets can be crushed and mixed with something sweet tasting for the child to find it easier to take. You can buy these remedies over the counter or ask your gp to prescribe them.
Worms is a common problem and is nothing to be ashamed of.
Every member in the house has to be treated tho as they will pass to others from towels or bedding. Good luck.
If really concerned go see gp they will not judge you in any way.

Perianal itching could be a clue that your grandson has pinworms, and yes, having pets, especially cats predisposes the family to getting pinworm infection. Your grandson's pediatrician can test for them and tell you how to get rid of them.
You should take him to the doctor to have his growth and weight assessed. He may be going through a growth spurt, during which children tend to grow lengthwise much faster than width wise.

When he goes to bed, get a flashlight and while in the dark, pull down his pj's. If he has worms YOU WILL SEE THEM.
Get him to a doctor! In fact, you might want him checked out for other things, just in case.
