Art is a way of using and enjoying the senses, The things in the world you see, touch, hear and feel. It's colors and sound all around us. Art can make you feel happy or sad. It can bring back memories. Art is beautiful and sometimes disturbing.
I would use examles of all of the about so they can experience what you are telling them. How exciting to be able to teach and share such an important part of life.

I am actually going back to school for a teaching degree in Art Education. I would tell the children that art is everywhere, in everything that we see. Aesthetics, shape, form, color. Art was the first form of communication (cave drawings, etc.) Architecture is art. Symbols, logos, automotive design. The desks that they're sitting in were all influenced by art. Good Luck!!!

Art is the joy of seeing, interpreting and expression. Tell them its like running, jumping and dancing. Running when you sense the speed and see things go by in a hurry...landscapes are like that because the light is fleeting. Jumping because its like no other experience...to get off the ground and for a moment, be somewhere else. Artists who concentrate lose themselves for a time. Dancing, because there is so much joy in being in harmony with music. With art, there is the same kind of joy when your creations are one with the Universe. Living every day with those kinds of experiences is what makes life worth living.

They wont understand 'mode of expression'. Its better to let them play with colors & come up to their own creations. U can make 4th graders understand art in a simpler way. GOOD LUCK!

Art is a form of creative expression where you can do whatever you want and whatever you need to express your feelings of and to the world.
Ah, maybe that's too complicated for little kids but I'm sure you are smart enough to make it easy to understand for them now that you've got the definition of it.
