How do diesel engines work on motorhomes?

I'm new in the RV business and would like to explain to customers why diesel is better than gas coaches and how they work.

more low end torque to pull that 20,000 pound beast up through the hills. better life expectancy. less maintenance. and with the perfomance industry gaining by leaps and bounds with diesels, its easier to be able to add some more torque and power with the push of a button

Well, I don't know if one is better than the other for making a vehicle move down the road. They both accomplish the task equally well in most respects. There are some differences of course. No spark plugs for one. The heat of compression ignites the fuel. A diesel can burn many types and kinds of fuel. Check out the stuff which goes into bio-diesel fuel. Diesel engines never need the tune up that goes with an ignition system, no points, no plugs. Diesels have a narrower RPM range but have gtreater torque at cruising speed, which is why they are preferred for long haul trucks. So, it's not that diesels arre better, just different.

Mostly it's a matter of torque vs rpm. Diesel engines develop HP at a much lower RPM than gas which makes for a (nominal) fuel saving on hills and mountains. Wear & tear is usually less on the diesel vs gas, however, repair and upkeep more than offset the differences. The main selling points are usually --- do you mind waiting in line at truck stops to fuel-up? If not, then if the customer can afford it diesel probably just makes more sense when pushing around a house on wheels. Ever see a GAS eighteen wheeler?

Diesel engines last several hundreds of thousands of miles if maintained, but the maintenance costs are much higher than with gas engines. An air filter for my diesel costs $150. compared to less than $10. for a gas engine.
