Your going to have to have an Aircraft, Instructor and Fuel at some point. Usually you rent an aircraft (locally it's $70 and hour Dry for a C-172) then you fuel it up (about $3.70 a gallon) and pay your instructor (anywhere from $13-... and hour) so yea, it adds up. Then your gonna have to go through ground school, and that requires books and an instructor is a good idea. Learning to Fly is not cheap, at the Local FBO, from start to finish it's about $5K to get you license.

Contact your local Civil Air Patrol chapter. The CAP used to offer free or very low cost flight instruction. I'm not sure if they still do, but it's worth a try.

There are companies that train helicopter pilots. They will train you for a deferred payment. They train you, you work for them for some time (in the contract...) and they take the cost of the lessons out of your paycheck.
I don't know who or what but I think there is one here in Houston.
It sounds like a good deal to me.

I used to work for an airline, and we got discount/free flying lessons. That's one way.

Join the military and they'll pay you to fly for them - if you get sent to flight school, that is.

Why does everybody want something for nothing?
Yeah, go to the edge of a cliff, jump off, and start flapping.

Take a feather in either hand and start flapping... or cough up some serious money.
